Exercises

1. Countries and income

Click on "The Guide" to Asia week's Salary Survey 2000, where you can choose to see a list of countries, sorted by salary and different types of job. Remember that the survey dates a couple of years back and that salaries may have changed since the survey was carried out.

  • Choose three countries and compare the salaries for a "bank manager", a "civil engineer" and a "doctor".
  • The figures are given in US dollars - you may wish to calculate the amounts into your own local currency.
  • Find out how much money a manager in a bank, an engineer and a doctor earn in your country. You may want to contact a trade union to find out the exact amount.
  • Discuss the difference in salaries in various countries.
2. Child labour in Pakistan

Read the article about child labour in Pakistan

  • Find Pakistan on a map. Find facts about Pakistan at CIA's homepage and write at least five important keywords about the country.
  • Discuss what ILO (International Labour Organization) and other organisations do to improve conditions for child workers.
  • Why does it take so long time to get child labour stopped?
3. Price

Find Indonesia on a map. Find facts about Indonesia at CIA's homepage and write at least five important keywords about the country.

  • Calculate the price of the shoes from Clean Clothes Campaign into your own local currency. You may use the Universal Currency Converter on the Internet: http://www.xe.com/ucc/.
  • Calculate how much money sport shoe use for wages. Also calculate what all the other expenses are in your own local currency.
4. Personalities

At Young Asia Television's homepage http://www.yatv.net/pages/youtpersonalities01.htm, you can meet a group of young activists who work to improve rights and the environment in Asia.
