Buddhism

Buddhism is probably one of the most peaceful religions

Buddhists believe that people need to become enlightened by following a path pointed out by Buddha. To be a Buddhist is first and foremost to tread an inner path. It is believed that by living modestly and meditating, Buddhists can reach Nirvana.

In reality, it is very few people who believe that they will ever come that far. Their religious objective, therefore, is to live in a way that enables them to be reborn to a better life.

Monasteries

In Buddhist countries in Asia, there are many monasteries where monks live together and meditate a large part of the day. Even if Buddhists don't believe in a god, they believe that praying and good deeds are the way to an improved reincarnation.

One way of praying is by turning prayer wheels that hang in large numbers outside Buddhist temples. Inside the temples, Buddhists light candles and make sacrifices by lightening butter oil lamps and offering other presents.

In the streets, the sight of monks in their bordeaux and yellow dress is probably the most visible sign that you are in a Buddhist area.
